The Palace Hotel was built on the former site of the palace of the Duke and Duchess of Medinaceli. In March of 1911 the first stone was laid and only 18 months later the Europe's largest hotel was inaugurated on October 12, 1912 in the presence of their Royal Highnesses, King and Queen.
